The Springer Scholarship

ABOUT DOUG SPRINGER

A member of the Maine Swimming and Diving Hall of Fame and the Old Town High School Hall of Fame, Springer set six national records and one world record as a master’s swimmer. He has won eight national titles.

During his ten year tenure coaching the Old Town High girls’ swimming and diving teams, his teams won six Maine Principals’ Association State Championships. In his one year as coach of the Old Town High boys’ team, Springer guided the team to the MPA title.

The former University of Maryland swimming and diving team captain and two time Atlantic Coast Conference record holder and champion served the communities of Old Town and Orono as the Executive Director of the Old Town YMCA.. After retiring from the Old Town-Orono YMCA, Springer relocated to Arizona where he coached the Saddleback Masters Swim Club to 15 state titles.

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The scholarship is awarded annually to a graduating senior who has been or who currently is a  Maine YMCA, USA, and/or high school swimming and diving team member. The recipient shall have demonstrated distinctively as a swimmer, diver, or team manager the ideals, attitudes, and actions  consistent with the scholarship criteria.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

1. The recipient shall have exhibited dedication to  competitive swimming and/or diving.

2. The recipient shall have exhibited dedication to his/her team, school, and community.

3. The recipient may or may not elect to continue his/her swimming and/or diving collegiately.

4. The recipient’s dedication to his or her team shall override his or her achievements as a competitor.
